On Sibling Relationships
by Adrienne Young

I love romance in a YA book as much as the next reader, but so often I feel like friendship and family bonds aren’t examined very closely. This is something that was really important to me in writing SKY IN THE DEEP because at the very core of the book lies the sibling relationship between Eelyn and her brother Iri. There are a lot of story layers surrounding it, but it’s really the heart of the story.

There is something really interesting about sibling relationships because they are so complex. Not only do you have shared experiences, but you have your own filter on them. Siblings often share the same trauma, even if they respond differently to it, and most fascinating is the personal evolution factor. Because we all change and grow, and no one knows your old self the way your siblings do. And as you change, the family dynamic really pushes back against it, trying to fit you back into an old mold. I think this happens to everyone, and it really lets you examine change within yourself. This is something that isn’t dependent upon genre or setting because siblings are siblings no matter where or when you exist. That is a really cool thought.

Close in age, and raised to fight alongside each other, there is a strong bond between Eelyn and Iri from a very young age. But on a mental and emotional level, they’ve also lost their mother violently in a raid and have grieved together. Iri is Eelyn’s entire world, in a sense, and when she loses him too, her life becomes the pursuit of revenge. When she learns that the brother she loved and worshipped isn’t actually dead and that, in fact, he betrayed them, Eelyn is sent over the edge of a very, very dark abyss.

I grew up with three siblings, an older sister, an older brother, and a twin brother. I wouldn’t say that Eelyn and Iri are based upon my twin brother and I, but I do think that I drew a lot of inspiration from my family’s sense of loyalty and honor. It was always a prominent focus while we were growing up and when I wrote SKY IN THE DEEP, our family was going through a profoundly painful time of loss in losing my dad. Our bonds were never stronger than they were in that time, and I think it definitely played into Eelyn’s story.

And there’s also a deeply rooted theme of what it means to forgive. Offense from family is so much harder to cope with and heal from because of all the ties we have to each other. And it’s not like a friend or a colleague or a lover because in the end, they are still your family.

They will always be a part of you. So, I really enjoyed delving into that mess and unraveling it a bit. It’s something that is so complicated that you can never really fully explore it and honestly, those are my favorite things to write about.

SUMMARY:

OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother's betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

A lush, Viking-age inspired fantasy about loyalty, forgiveness, and the definition of family.

Never send a hero to do a monster’s job.

Forty years have passed since Jaevid Broadfeather brought peace to Maldobar and Luntharda. But that fragile truce will be tested as darkness gathers on the horizon. The vicious armies of the Tibran Empire have crossed the far seas and are threatening to destroy Maldobar completely. Not even the dragonriders can match the Tibran war machines. And after an attempt to awaken Jaevid from his divine sleep fails, the fate of Maldobar is looking grim.

Reigh has never known what it means to be a normal human. Raised amongst the gray elves in the wild jungle of Luntharda, he’s tried everything to fit in. But the dark power within him is bursting at the seams—refusing to be silenced. And while his adoptive father, Kiran, insists this power must be kept secret, Reigh knows he’s running out of time.

As Maldobar burns, the world is desperate for a new hero. Destiny has called, and one boy will rise to answer.
